Hedge, canopy and clean-up work in Beaverbrook

Beaverbrook was laid out as a planned community in the 1960s, and sixty years on its defining feature is canopy. The mature maples, ashes and spruces that make the neighbourhood pleasant to walk through also make it the most expensive part of Kanata to keep tidy, because autumn leaf volume on a typical lot here is several times what a 1990s subdivision produces. A fall clean-up on one of these lots can run twenty to forty bags, and whether those bags sit inside the quote or on top of it is the number to settle first.

That canopy brings the tree by-law into play far more often than elsewhere in the west end. Many Beaverbrook trees are comfortably over 30 cm trunk diameter measured at 1.3 m above grade, which on an urban lot of one hectare or less makes them distinctive trees requiring a permit before they are removed, injured or destroyed, and heavy pruning can count as injuring. That threshold comes from a summary published by a local arborist firm, because the City's own pages could not be read automatically (Advanced Tree Solutions), so confirm with Forestry Services before any significant cutting. The City's critical root zone rule is the other constraint: a radius of 10 cm for every 1 cm of trunk diameter, so a mature 60 cm maple has a 6 m protected radius you cannot dig inside without approval (City of Ottawa).

Shade changes what grows. Large parts of these lawns get three or four hours of direct sun a day at best, and a sun-mix seed blend put down there thins out within two seasons however well it is watered. Shade-tolerant fescue blends, a higher cutting height and accepting a less dense lawn under the heaviest canopy is the realistic plan. Moss in the shaded north-side strip is a light and drainage problem rather than something a herbicide solves.

The original cedar hedges are the other Beaverbrook fixture. Planted in the 1970s and 1980s, many now stand well past three metres with hollow brown interiors, and they need a staged restoration across two or three seasons rather than a single hard cut. Driveways here tend to be longer and steeper than in the newer subdivisions, with hedges and mature trunks close to the edge, so plough and salt damage to planting is a genuine risk that belongs in the snow conversation in September rather than in March.
